Samothraki Island - Virtual Tour

26 May 11

Samothrace (also Samothraki) (Greek: Σαμοθράκη, [samoˈθraci]) is a Greek island in the northern Aegean Sea. It is practically a mountain arising from the sea.

In an area of just 178 sq. km. rises the Mount Fengari or Saos, the “Holy Mountain of Antiquity” at an altitude of 1,611 meters. This mountain has forests, prairies, steep gravelled slopes, rocks and rivers and has shaped the life and the traditions of the local people.

The island’s mountainous mass makes it perfect for mountaineering and promenading in nature and its wild vegetation. The landscapes we encounter in the northern and southern parts of Samothraki are strikingly different; their differences providing the island with a significant and unique ecological value.

Plane-trees, volumes of waters as well as desert shores with caves, abound in the island all the way to the seaside. It is an island rich in flora and fauna, with numerous water resources and springs. It combines very clean shores with rich vegetation and running waters.

We created a virtual tour of this natural treasure showcasing the most significant villages, beaches, forests, rivers all the way up to the top of the Saos Mountain.
