Scope of the project was the creation of a Geographical Information System for the municipalities of Chania & Heraklion in Crete that consists of two main systems, one internal for the needs of the municipality & urban planning officials, and one widely available for the citizens and professionals ofthe two cities.
The GIS incorporates a custom city map with the road network and points of interest, the urban planning status based on the National Cadastral, various digitized & georeferenced maps of urban planning interest, the monuments and preserved buildings with their legislation records, an application for tracking construction requests by the citizens and finally an interface for the submission of various applications to the municipalities.
The main contractor of the project was ELPHO Ltd., a Greek GIS & Photogrammetry Enterprise that supervised the project.
The orbitlab team carried out the setting up of the underlying database and developed the desktop and web environment for the project using industry standard applications, but also custom tools for the specific needs of the municipality.
